What a fun December we had! In an effort to teach Wyatt about the true meaning of Christmas, we had an Advent calendar this year (thanks to his Nonna). Actually, if you need a way to get rid of Halloween candy, Advent calendars will do the trick. Every day Wyatt would wake up and say, "It is Christmas Day yet?" Every single day! I wondered if he would make it to Christmas Day he was so excited, but thankfully that kid has a lot of patience for a 3-year old and we made it! He was very familiar with the story of baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and knows all about the shepherds, wise men, angel and the star. It is hard to explain to him "where" baby Jesus is...but at least the foundation has been laid and hopefully it will gain more significance to him as the years go by. He did dress up like a wise man for his school nativity story reading...that was fun...trying to find some "gold" to go in his gold trophy (I couldn't find a treasure chest so a gold-plated trophy had to do the trick!). The "gold" ended up being two golden jelly beans :-) And believe it or not, he took those two jelly beans to school and did not eat them, share them, lose them, etc. They returned with him when I picked him up at 1:00. Very impressive!
Well, Christmas Day finally got here and the expression on Wyatt's face when he woke up that morning was well worth the wait. He was very excited to see that Santa had eaten his very heavily sprinkled cookies and drank the milk he left for him. I think that seeing his stocking full of fun stuff was the best part about the whole day! Wyatt is a little particular about some things and has a thirst for neatness, complements of his father. He did not get that from me! So any time we would take the things out of his stocking, he would tell us that they needed to go back in. I wonder if in that case, it is him trying to relive the fun portion of the day...maybe like it was so exciting to see it all in the stocking for the first time and he didn't want to ruin the moment...does that make any sense?
When he wasn't in school, he would spend the mornings staying in his pajamas. In the midst of shopping, etc., we found plenty of time to just hang out and do special things together. Like making a Gingerbread House. Like shopping for a little boy who isn't as fortunate as Wyatt is when it comes to toys and stuff. I have to tell you, those two things were probably the highlight of my Christmas (among other wonderful memories). We named the little boy "Harry" for lack of a better name. Harry is the same age as Wyatt and so we went to Walgreens to pick out several things that Harry might like. Wyatt was very involved in the wrapping (and unwrapping) of Harry's toys and he would ask, "Where does Harry live?" "What color is Harry's house?" The answers of course, are "Birmingham" and "Blue." Making the Gingerbread House was a ton of fun for both of us! Wal-Mart thankfully sells pre-made houses so I didn't have to figure out how to actually MAKE the house. That might have taken all day. We just mixed the icing together and put it on the house along with gumdrops and other forms of round candy. And then licking the beaters and running from the camera was a perfect way to finish off the morning! It was fun to see how deliberate he was about putting the candy on the house.
We also tackled potty training during the holidays. Yep, we did it. Bit the bullet head on and just did it. Cold turkey. And to our surprise (well, not really!), it was tremendously successful and has been ever sense. He got out of school on a Friday and Saturday morning we just took the diapers away and told him it was time to wear big boy underwear. Chris and I were sweating since we had a birthday party that afternoon for Kendall Feild that we were going to attend. Paranoid of an accident in the car or at the party, we just decided to see if he could do it. And he did. He has been so good about telling us when he needs to "tee-tee" and for the first few days we would take him to the potty and help him with his pants. Now he just announces, "I'm going to tee-tee" and will run down the hall with his pants half on and we'll hear him flush and then come back in and say, "I'm done. How many jelly beans do I get?" The answer now is ONE jelly bean. We went from 5 down to one at the risk of getting cavities. He even held it all the way to Montgomery and needed to go as soon as he got out of the car. Thankfully some of my parents' potted plants made good targets. Must be fun being a boy! And oh yeah, when he goes #2, he gets 10 jelly beans. We won't fudge on that! It's worth every bit of those ten beans!
We had lots of time with our families this year and enjoyed every minute of it. Christmas Eve, Nonna and Poppy Williams came to church with us and then with Aunt Cynthia and Uncle Kevin, joined us afterward at our house for soup and sandwiches. Mark, Wendy and Kendall Feild were there as well and Wyatt and Kendall had a great time decorating cookies for Santa. Wyatt must have thought Santa wanted extra sprinkles on his cookies since he dumped the entire container of sprinkles out. Christmas morning the Williams family came over for lunch and we opened gifts. It was a lot of fun seeing Wyatt's face when he opened up his Screaming Banshee! Next year will bring the addition of another Williams family member. We're all looking forward to meeting Aunt Cynthia and Uncle Kevin's new baby. Soon! YAY!
December 28th we headed South to Montgomery to spend time with the Patterson clan. It was extra special this year with TWO new babies in our family! Bradford and her cousin Elijah Brooks hung out together. The had fun just looking at each other. Not much else they can do right now. Although Bradford did reach out to touch his face several times. It was cute. Wyatt was SO excited to finally meet his cousin that we've been talking about for a long time now. When he met him for the first time, he said, "Hey Elijah Brooks! I've got you a present!" And he ran into the room with the gifts and brought back the yellow Caterpillar truck that we've had for 3 months. Hilarious! Wyatt got a Big Wheel and a roller coaster. I'm not sure who had more fun on the roller coaster...Wyatt or the adults! Bradford received an American Doll baby from New York and a beautiful ballerina music box that came from Mondon. It reminds me of the one I had when I was a little girl. Wyatt has named the ballerina "Bradford." Fitting. It was so nice to visit with Erin and Jay. I believe that in between the craziness of three kids being around this year, we were able to get some good quality time in. We enjoyed visiting with my mom's parents as well. Mimi and Papa gave Wyatt this cool remote control car (remoka matrol as Wyatt pronounces it). Again, I think Chris and Jay had more fun playing with it, along with their indoor helicopters!

We met my Dad's side of the family at Elmcroft for a family picture. Wyatt and his cousin Sutton had fun together, as usual. They played with the water fountain and took turns making each other water cups. Afterward we went to my aunt and uncle's house and enjoyed dinner. Wyatt and Sutton again were up to the usual 3-year old fun and hid behind the Christmas tree most of the night (when he wasn't running from the camera!). It was a bittersweet time...my cousin Lauren and her husband Rob and their little girl Bennett just moved to Kansas City from Montgomery. We will truly miss them being so close by, but are excited about the opportunities they have for ministry there. They will also be adding to our family this summer as they await the arrival of baby #2.
And lastly, get a chuckle out of this. We have an Elf on a Shelf and this year Wyatt was old enough to give his personal elf a name. So he named him...Daiquiri. We don't drink daiquiris, we don't mention daiquiris, we're not sure where he came up with that name. All I can think of is that the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" has gone through several revisions and there is one part where he sings "For it's one, two, three daiquiris at the old ballgame." No lie! It's hilarious! First he sang it correctly, then he subbed "zachary" and now it's final version contains the word "daiquiri." It has made us laugh and laugh over and over.
It was a great Christmas this year.

We truly have a lot to be thankful for...the Lord has been so good to us. We look forward to a wonderful 2009!
