Wyatt's 3rd Birthday

What a wonderful day we had today! Our precious little boy turned THREE today, October 14, 2008. When I reflect over the past three years, I'm amazed at how much one person can change and grow. It has been amazing to see all of Wyatt's milestones, accomplishments, first words, first sentences, etc. He truly is the joy of my life!

The day started around 6:30 this morning when I heard footsteps coming to meet me in the hallway. Before he could say anything, I said "Happy Birthday Wyatt!" and he gave me a big hug. Chris and I bought him a blue big boy bike and a red toy tractor. Mimi and Papa Smith graciously supplied the helmet for the bike. We took several pictures and just enjoyed the morning together as a family. Chris and I made cupcakes last night, and one day we'll look back on that and laugh, but it took us (no lie) almost FOUR hours to complete! Who would have ever known that unsweet chocolate was so hard to melt. And no one told me that Blue Bonnet Light butter is not intended to make icing. So after three attempts at the chocolate, two attempts at the icing, and one trip to the grocery store, alas the cupcakes were finished. And mighty tasty I must confess. Even if they were really bad, they were going to be the best cupcakes I've ever sunk my teeth into! So Wyatt took them to school to share with his friends, and I'm sure they were a hit with the 2 to 3 year olds. When I picked him up from school, he was wearing a birthday hat that his teacher Ms. Donna made. He was so happy to have it on, and I was surprised that he actually was wearing it...he usually doesn't like hats. I asked him if he had a good day and he said yes. I asked him if his friends sang to him and he got a big smile on his face!

We got home and tried settling down for a nap, but I guess the sugar was too much for him, or else he just couldn't calm down and relax. (Oh, I was able to catch the clock at 1:18 and informed him that he was officially three years old...that this was the exact time he came into the world. He wasn't as impressed as I was). Several minutes later, I overheard him singing, "Happy Birthday to me, happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to meeee, happy birthday to ME! Now let's eat some cake!" After chuckling to myself, I almost walked away thinking he would settle down, but then I heard him talking to himself. He was saying, "No, that's MY birthday cake said McQueen." Did I mention that he loves Lightning McQueen? (from the Disney movie, CARS).

When Chris got home from work, he took Wyatt outside to try and ride his bike. Next thing I heard was crying...Wyatt had fallen and scraped his knee and hand. Coupled with no nap, he was visibly upset and just overtired. We eased the pain with two bandaids and the show Word World (his current favorite show on PBS...very educational...teaches him how to spell and recognize words which he is doing VERY well!). Of course Bobby and Rarw's had to join him too.

Our friends the Souders came over for dinner. We grilled burgers and hotdogs and made homemade French fries. Our neighbors Kristen and Brian Bailey were sweet to bring Wyatt a CARS puzzle (which he LOVED) and some CARS stickers (equally happy with!). Allegra across the street brought me a yellow flower (what a sweet friend) and Wyatt a yellow balloon. We are blessed to have such great friends on our street. Wyatt, Brooks and Jake ran around the house chasing the cats and each other and really had a great time together. They played hard, ate good, and enjoyed some cake. Again, I attempted to make a cake from scratch and I think I did a pretty good job. Other than it falling in the middle and on the sides, it was really good. It tasted better than it looked, but no one cared. Wyatt was happy that McQueen and Tow Mater were on his cake, along with three white candles.

When the Souders left, we were outside in the front yard and Wyatt was running around in his cement mixer t-shirt and a diaper. It was just the two of us. I instantly had a memory of the day he was born and how my little baby boy has grown into a healthy, active, smart and adorable three-year-old. We all had a wonderful day!
